Mark your calendars for Broadway’s Night of Nights! The 72nd annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, June 10 at 7:00 pm. And who better to host the Tony Awards than the uber-talented, Tony Nominees, Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban?
It’s no surprise that this year’s leading contenders are Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. They topped the nominations, scoring 12 nods apiece, including Best Musical. The brand-new musical, The Band’s Visit and play revival Angels in America took 11 each, while hot-ticket play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child got 10.
Shows competing for Best Musical category include The Band’s Visit, Mean Girls, Frozen, and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Two Tony nominees this year; Denzel Washington in Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Comet and Amy Schumer in Meteor Shower are both nominated for Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.
The 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will be presented to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chita Rivera. Webber has previously won seven Tony Awards, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a Grammy Award. Rivera has won two Tony Awards and received eight additional Tony nominations.
But let’s not forget our very own Bourbon Missouri native, Taylor Lauderman, who is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Mean Girls. “You Go Glenn Coco!” Taylor is known for her work on Broadway in Bring It On and Kinky Boots. Taylor has also starred in roles off-Broadway at The Vineyard, Papermill Playhouse, and The Muny in Forest Park.
Once a year, we celebrate all things theatre. Honoring superb singing, mind-blowing performances, magnificent set design and compelling story lines, the Tony Awards highlight the magic of performance and is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry. Marking 72 years of excellence on Broadway, the 2018 Tony Awards are something you don’t want to miss!
